Risk/Reward - Jonnu Smith
I don’t know if I will go as crazy as I did with my Austin Hooper love last off-season with Jonnu Smith (and another tight end to be discussed in the future). With this though, Jonnu Smith is someone I am likely to have a heavy radar on in drafts this coming season. Jack Doyle (who I love in 2020) is fine, but we know what Doyle is. Smith though comes with a looming upside as a third year tight end who has shown flashes. One game that sticks out to me is during the Chiefs AFC Championship game.
Over the course of weeks 7-16 Jonnu Smith was the TE12. Often, you are not happy with anything outside the tight end 7. Smith only had two games outside TE3 range, and was a serviceable fantasy piece for owners each week.
Smith is one of the best late round tight ends going into 2020 costing you an 11th round pick as the 17th tight end off the board. Although my rankings are currently not final, I have Smith in the low-end TE1, high-end TE2 range. He comes with large upside and gets to play Houston twice, the Bears, and the Vikings who were among the worst against the position in 2019.
The negative side to Smith, is a lack of targets capping at 7 during the regular season. He is on a team that ran the 10th most run plays, which does cap his true upside. His touchdown upside being on a competent offense with a reborn Ryan Tannehill gives him a good spot as a flyer in 2020.
